Round Valley late June

Postby ednjenn » Wed Jun 09, 2010 9:27 am

Newbie here. Looking to spend a couple nights and hike the trails and summit on the last weekend of June. Have permits etc... As a San Diegan with NO snow equip other than SealSkinz.... will it likely be clear of most snow in another 3 weeks or buy some gaiters suck it up and wear boots rather than my usual trail runners / UL gear?

Thanks! Ed

I would think late June would be fine at RV. None of the RV campsites are actually on the meadow so no worries about soggy conditions. Many of the sites are in fairly exposed sunny locations.

Round Valley

I was up to Round Valley last week and though there was a fair amount of water on the trail, the area around Round Valley was basically snow free. The meadow itself is a bog at this point but the camp sites all looked quite snow free and dry

Thanks to both of you. Two more newbie dumb questions. Is there likely snow tromping in a week and a half to the summit? (gaiters with my trail runners?) and someone told me their Jetboil was less than stellar up there, but I seem to see others have no issues. Is that altitude a concern? I'd think not since it's not extreme. Ok, thats all. Thanks for tolerating me. Ed

Other posts in these forums seem to indicate the trail to the peak is mostly if not totally snow free. Certainly no need for crampons, etc. I was up a couple weeks ago and there was some snowy bits but it was melting fast. I've no experience with the Jetboil. I'm sure you'll have a great visit.

I have used the Jetboil at 10,500 ft with no problem.
