I want to thank you guys for the wonderful service you are providing. I belong to the Walkabout Wilderness group in San Diego and we do a lot of hiking up in the San Jacinto area. Trying to obtain reliable fresh information from here has always been a problem, until I found your board. Great articles and good info.
We will have a group of about 30 in Idylwild next week. One hike we haven't done in quite a while is the Tram - Peak - Down Devils slide or alternatly Tram - Wellmans - Devils Slide. Some of the group panic at more than a trace of snow. Any words of wisdom. Will check later this week. Thanks again. :D

Hi dpiller,
Glad you've benefited from the useful info.
I can't speak from recent experience on some of those trails,, but you should only run into snow in patches between the Ranger Sta & Round Valley (north facing), and the next stretch to Wellman's Devide may have a bunch. If you want to continue, my guess is they'll be snow after that in a lot of areas. there's a couple posting on this board re. that.

If you want a nice alternative, (no snow but can get a lot of sun & heat) head on the south side by Law's & Skunk Cabbage Meadow. Willow Creek, which you will cross has lots of water right now. You can go from Humber park to tram, even making it a loop (although a long one), and head to Wellman's, tram, Willow cr & back to Saddle Jct.

Have fun in the forest.

I don't mean to harsh on your buzz, but 30 people?? Really? You need to travel in the wilderness with 30 people? If I ran across a group of 30 people on San Jacinto I would be annoyed.....and pissed off. I get into the wilderness to escape crowds.

You can do whatever you want, but realize such a large group might just kill the experience for some people. It is a very small and delicate wilderness.

I am glad I won't be up there....

I really hope I am missing something here????

State park rules limit groups to 15 people and they must hike and camp apart from other groups. It says so right on the wilderness permit.

Hi dpiller,
I did Devils Slide to the peak today. It was my third try since last month. My 2 attempts in May were cut short because of snow, but today there were only a few spots where the snow made the trail kind of hard to find. If this warm weather continues I think the snow will be mostly gone off the trail in 2 weeks.
