Water cache?

I'm planning to go up Sunday and want to leave 3 quarts in the water cache at the 5700' notch. Anyone looked inside the bucket recently? Any water or just full of trash? Is the bucket even still there? I'll remove any junk/garbage i find.

Also this time i'm going to use "used" bottles refilled with plain water. The first time i left new unopened Gatorade bottles and think some people found those just too tempting and drank them when they didn't really need to. Although someone did leave a dollar in payment.

buckets was still there a week ago, didn't see the lid anywhere, but it did appear someone removed the empties.

I rounded up the lid and bucket..they had blown away a little into the bushes. put the lid back on the bucket with the rock on top..

Some thoughts on the water cache explaining what i did today: I wanted to refill the bucket with 2 or 3 quarts today. However yesterday when loading my pack i realized there was no way i could carry the 5 quarts i wanted for myself plus an additional 3 quarts for the cache. Since i don't do a through hike often and i didn't think others were restocking i decided the best thing to do was to just remove the bucket so it doesn't become a nuisance. The bucket was empty today so i removed it. No more bucket at 5700' notch.

However ... After meeting up with Steve and Fernando at the tram today they said that the cache IS used and people HAVE been leaving water. They mentioned a number of cases where people they know have made use of the cache and were very thankful it was there. So i've changed my mind. I'll try to return the cache next weekend unless Steve beats me to it.

I realize now i probably should have sought input about the cache first before i removed it. Anyway, it's not really gone, just in hiding, and can be moved back. Also i hope Ron, or was it Rod, who likes to hike DOWN to the cache and back isn't too upset it's missing today.

On a side note i enjoyed a great hike up the trail today getting to the top in a PR time for me. Was also lots of fun to chat with Steve and Fern at the tramway bar after our hikes.

How about adding a little log book and asking people to enter a note if they take or leave water?

I could turn it into a geocache and require the finder to leave a quart of water before logging the cache. But to be clear i won't make it a geoache so as not to encourage the unprepared to make the hike.

Hi Florian. A couple of thoughts:

Rule 1: Never trust anything that Steve tells you.

Rule 2: Steve is far more reliable a source of information than I am.

Rule 3: Fernando is actually the Mayan god responsible for making the world end in 2012. He seems nice, but it's only 2010. Don't make him mad.
