Help for an outsider . . .

Postby Mckenzie34 » Sat Feb 06, 2010 11:54 am

I'm from Oregon and will be traveling to Palm Springs in late March. I am looking to do something other than sitting by the pool . . . I'm considering hiking/running from the bottom to top of Mt San Jacinto from the Palm Springs side. I'm good with a GPS/map and want a challenge. Anyone have ideas for a route? Thanks in advance, Mark

There will still be a lot of snow above 7000' in March. Since you have mountains where you live, why not try something new and check out some of the desert peaks. Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego and Palm Springs have a wide variety of desert hikes.

Running to the top not a good idea in March.

With all the weather we have had recently, I suspect that the snow level will still be below Long Valley at that time. There will probably be areas where crampons and ice axes will be required. Once you hit the hard pack snow, you can snow shoe to the top. Best bet is to check back when the time gets closer.
