San Gorgonio-Vivian Creek conditions

Postby Joe » Thu Mar 08, 2007 9:59 am

Has anyone hiked this route in March? I am thinking of going up this weekend. Here is a forest service Vivian Creek report as of Feb 24.

February 24, 2007
VIVIAN CREEK
Patchy snow up to 2 inches deep exists from the trailhead to Vivian Camp. The Creek crossing above Vivian Camp is icy, use caution. From Vivian to Halfway Camps, there is up to 6 inches of snow. Snow drifts up to 16 inches exists between Halfway and the 10000 foot level. The switchbacks above both Halfway and High Creek can be icy, especially in the morning and evening hours. Very little snow exists on the summit. All hikers should carry crampons.

That sounds right for that date. Probably by now the snow coverage is less but more icy in areas where it remains. I would bring an ice axe unless I was very certain that it would be soft. You might get more replies on this other board, hopefully from somebody who has actually been there recently instead of guessers like me. :D
