quick question, hiking to the peak tomorrow

Postby zamafir » Fri Nov 13, 2009 9:13 pm

Greetings all,

i ran into this wonderful forum trying to locate some information on what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. Apparently using the weather info from the tram is about as foolish as my gut told me i'd be (averages of 60s-70s vs 40s).

I'll be heading up on one of the trams before 9am and bringing a friend. I'm packing 3L of water, a dozen neutra grain bars, flashlight, swiss army knife, iphone, sunscreen and dslr.... but I'm curious what you all would advise i wear (aside from a solid set of warn in hiking boots).

Will jeans be enough on the lower half or will i want to toss a thermal layer under? What about up top? undershirt, shirt, windbreaker - will that be enough? I tend to run hot but that link to the 7 day forcast for the peak is scaring the crap out of me right now and has me thinking of tossing a long thermal layer on top and bottom and bringing a north face snow jacket.

Looking forward to replies, thanks in advance!

Also this will be my first time hiking the trail in a decade or so, i've printed the USGS on 11x17 and am thinking that should be sufficient. We'll be taking the tram up and hiking from there.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum zamafir! I don't know that you'll need the map at all, but I appreciate your preparation. It may be a bit wild and wooly up there with the changing weather conditions, but it's a short hike from the tram (5.5) and while it may be cold at the peak, you'll be moving on the way up and the way down...

I usually wear a t-shirt unless it's crazy cold, then I bring a windbreaker. I have never brought a jacket unless there was a foot or more of snow on the ground, in which case I usually bring one but never wear it. I'm not particularly warm blooded, but you're moving up there, and that generates a lot of internal heat.

No worries either way man. If you bring a jacket, you don't have to wear it. If you don't mind packing a little more, it'll buy you a bit of time to relax and really enjoy the peak.

Have fun up there. If you're going next weekend, a few of us may see you up there!

Please don't head out this time of year without lots of warm layers to put on including a warm hat and gloves.

You look like you're freezing! JK. Looks like you had a great time. I'll see you out there on the trail one of these fine days.
