Some last minute questions before the 7th

I'm wondering - is it hard to find your way above Flatrock in the dark?

Right now I'm planning on trying for a sub-24 hour triple, so I'd actually be doing one late Friday night alone in order to be able to do the 2nd and 3rd attempts with some crazy hikin' fools as excellent company.

I've never done the upper portion at night, so I'm curious if it's hard to find the way in the dark. I don't want to miss the last tram down and have to sit up there in the cold all night!

Another question. I was thinking about maybe just driving the motorhome instead of my car, so that we'd have a fridge, restroom, some chairs, even beds if someone wanted to take a quick nap before starting back up. Does that sound like a good idea, or do you think everyone will be anxious to jump back on the trail?

My first trip up Skyline I left to late. The only way I had to follow the trail was with my eyeballs. The sun set as I was on the upper part of the trail. Not knowing the trail and unable to "see" the trail, because I had neither a light or a map; I learned the value of a good LED flashlight.

I purchased a Fenix LED flashlight that offers a lot more penetration than most headlamps. These extra penetration makes picking up the trail easier.

With your experience on the trail and a good light I sure you would have no problems following the trail.

Zip I don't think the area above FR is going to be a problem. I do think that the first 200ft scramble up from the traverse will be though. I find it hard to find the route when the sun is shining on it.

i think with a head lamp you should be good.

you are planning to start at 3pm, catch the last tram down and then do what? will you be sleeping in the parking lot in your rv? will you go back home, what is your plan exactly?

missed you on the trail this past weekend.

Good question. I don't plan to drive home either way, so that's what made me think of bringing the RV. The added convenience for everyone may be handy, so I'd be happy to bring it. If no one really needs it, I can sleep just fine in the Durango as well.

I'm planning on starting the second trip at 2:00, which I think is when most people will be starting as well.

What time will everyone be arriving? 1:30? 2:00? I'm hoping to get at least 2 or 3 hours of sleep before beginning the next trip.

Howdy All

I will be starting at 1:15 AM with Norma, Lilbitmo (Patrick), and several of their friends. I'll head into Palm Springs Friday afternoon and stay the night. It's not like I'm going to be able to sleep but at least I won't have to deal with the one hour drive from Riverside before heading up. I'm planning on a 6.5 hour first Skyline and hope to catch the first tram down to start number two.

Unfortuantely, it looks like the weather may be warmer than I'd hoped for on Saturday.
