springs and water between Martinez Canyon and hwy 74

Postby bryankeith » Sun Nov 01, 2009 7:04 am

Leaving in about 10 days, I'm planning a 4-night backpack trip from Martinez Canyon to the Trading Post via Cactus Spring, Omstott, and Palm Canyon.

Does anyone if there's been water recently in Cactus Spring, Agua Alta Spring, or the spring where the Cactus Spring Trail leaves Martinez Canyon? Another option would be around Jack Miller Cabin.

It's my understanding that Horsethief Creek has water now, but it's a long ways between Martinez Canyon and Horsethief Creek.

Thank you for any help.

Aqua Alta and Cactus Spring always have water. I've never known them not to. However, you may have to wade through some brush to get to the water at Aqua Alta and Cactus Spring is nothing but a mudhole a lot of times. I will try to get to Cactus Spring and see how it is. If I can I will let you know.

Aqua Alta is too far for a day hike (or 1/2 a day is more like it for me).

Thank you for the reply.

Knowing that there's water at Agua Alta will make a big difference for us. That's great news. Can anyone else confirm?

To follow up, we hiked passed Agua Alta on Nov. 16, and it was flowing well. There's a pipe coming out of the ground and water flows into a small metal tank that makes it easy for animals (human and otherwise) to get water. The water was flowing for 30 or so feet below this point before it seeped underground again.

We got water here and did not need water from Cactus Spring. We didn't look for that spring nor did we see it.

Agua Alta is located correctly on the 7.5' map and easy to find.

There was also water in Horsethief Creek.
