Skyline plans for 5/23

Postby Florian » Tue May 19, 2009 12:42 pm

Will be doing Skyline again this Saturday with friend Eric. He's never hiked the trail before. Starting 5am probably from Ramon Road trailhead. (I hate that museum trail bit.) Carrying much more water this time and planning to leave a quart cache at Flat Rock. Weather service is forecasting 92° high for Saturday which sounds good.

Doing the trail at all when the overnight temperature is not expected to be lower than 72 degrees doesn't sound like a great idea to me - especially with a start as late as 5 am. If you're intent on doing it, starting earlier might be wise.

It's just my opinion but at this time of year, unless we get an abnormally cool day, it's best to put off plans for C2C until next October - especially if someone has never done the hike before.

If your doing the c2c bit, I can tell you that on sunday we ran into three guys that were doing their final 1/2 mile to the summit (still five miles to go back) they appeared to be very fit and they were in their late 20's early 30's. they had already lost 6 people from the group that stopped at LV. They weren't smiling at all, and appeared to be pretty worn out. I believe they said they left the museum at 5, so they spent some time in the sun and it looked like it was really getting to them.

I agree with Kathy, earlier is way better now, and maybe 7 liters is a good idea. you can always stash some up on skyline when you start to realize you might be safe ( you remember where right ? :D )

good luck, and maybe I'll see you on the trail. -steve

this past weekend on skyline I went through 3 liters of water and 1 1/2 liters of cytomax and I wasn't in the sun but a couple hours.

Thanks for your suggestions Kathy. Last Saturday was quite a bit warmer than what's forecast for this coming Sat and i did okay starting at 6am. I will be carrying more water this coming weekend than i carried last.

I remember about where Tina had her cache. But if i leave anything it will be in plain view with a note. No point hiding it. Perhaps if the guy that died on Sunday had found a bottle in plain view he'd still be alive.

Florian, You've humbled me from ever joking about the stash again. perhaps you took me too seriuosly, perhaps my timing was just horrible.

seems like you have the beginning of what could be a great idea. I'm so glad that you were able to get extra fluids up there. It's my biggest fear in the desert in the summer.

a stocked and visible water drop up there is a great idea and I'm sure some of us have enough energy to carry an extra bottle or two everytime we go up.

Looks like Im missing Vivian creek this weekend so I guess I'm doing skyline sat a.m., I'm going to take up an insulated bag that can be tied to one of the little guys at 4300' and I'm leaving a couple of bottles of water in it. Most likely there will be room for more water in there, so if anybody feels like contributing....

I'm sure that nothing can really make you bring more than enough water like running out of water the weekend before can. right ?

If anybody has any objections to me tying a nylon bag to a tree in the middle of skyline plmk. It isn't what I go up there to see either.

I really want to leave some water at Flat Rock as i had to turn around there once in my youth and was very dehydrated by the time i got down. I hadn't thought to bring a bag stash the water in. I'll think about that.

Hope to see you Saturday. We'll probably go up from the museum trailhead after all starting at 5am. I know what you look like from your avatar. Look for me. I look like this .. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fboyd/3536926057/

:D

Gotta love that line.

Bluerail: Sorry to hear you won't be on Vivian. Hope all is well with the little critter.

I'll think about you as I drink some nice fresh cool water from Vivian Creek (and again at High Creek!) while you're suffering in the desert heat.

Oh, I almost forgot, I was going to bring you up a cold one to enjoy on the peak! I was going to pack it in snow at High Creek so it would be just the right temp as we got to the top! That's especially rough, cause the snow will be gone soon, so this is our last chance of the year to hoist an ice cold brew above 11,000' unless we do Whitney in the fall. Man, you sure you can't make it?

Hi Z, I'm still waiting to see if we can both be gone saturday for that long. The surgery went well and he's doing good.

Don't drink those yet, I'm still hoping.
