Conditions on San Jacinto?

Postby mcgyverj » Tue May 12, 2009 8:53 pm

We are planning to hike San Jacinto with some Boy Scouts this weekend and I wanted to see if anyone had a recent condition report. Going to take the tram up late on Friday for an evening hike to Round Valley. Hoping for a day hike up to the peak if conditions permit. Lots of snow? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Having done Marion Mountain Trail to Peak a couple days ago, I'm guessing that Long Valley to Round Valley is fairly easy to follow for a scout leader, but I wouldn't turn young boy scouts loose by themselves. Probably the shaded boulder field at 10,000 feet still has some large snow patches, and maybe the trail between Round Valley and Wellman's Divide. This is all just my guess. Hope that helps.

Hi,
I agree with Perry, the only area's will probably be a little on the way to Round Valley, then between there & Wellman's Devide the biggest chance.
You'll probably be able to dodge a lot of the snow, just remember after a series of switchbacks, the trail veers slightly SW to get to jct.
After that it should be good, I know for a fact that from the boulder field (10k ft.), the rest of the hike it almost completely dry, just a few small areas around the peak rocks.
Temps are warm, maybe even 70's at 8k.

Have fun,
