Martinez Mountain in the Santa Rosa Wilderness

It looks like we will be giving Martinez a try as a day hike with an early start on December 2nd. I think we'll need to be hiking by about 6:30 am to have almost enough daylight.

Have done Martinez several times and once climbed to the top with my dog, a female Rott mix. Hike is not as tough as many other hikes in the area and can be done easily in a day. I'm not a morning person so I've never started before 8 and have made it down in plenty of time for a late lunch at the Sugarloaf Cafe.

As far as the Sierra Club directions, use the alternate route up the ridge. It's much better than the route one, the gully route.

I've hiked all over that area and have yet to see a mountain lion although I saw TWO on a Rabbit Peak climb years ago. I have come across rattlers, though.

I wish I could join in on Dec.2 but have plans to be out of town that weekend. If I can get up there before the 2nd I'll post some pictures.

Thanks Halhiker - Maybe we can start at 7 am then. I do like ridges better than gullies, so that sounds like the best option.

I'm still planning on the hike to Martinez on Dec 2nd.

I'd still like to do Martinez Mountain in the Santa Rosas this Saturday if I can find someone to hike it with me.

Stats on the hike:

Distance: 16 miles round trip on trail and cross-country
Gain: 4300' total, 3500' out plus 800' on return
Time: 8-9 hours round trip
Starting time: 7 am to finish by dark

I'm still good to go. My friends Bruno and Chrissy might want to come along too. Are you married to a 7 AM start time, I'd even be up for a 6 AM beginning. It's a little early, but I have plans for a Saturday night soiree that I would like to attend. I could still do 7 AM though. I know the trail to Cactus Spring, but from there I have no knowledge. It would be nice to be out before dark or at least shortly after dark.

Allen, Sooz, Steve and I did the hike to Martinez yesterday. It was a long day, but nice and clear and the views from the top were great. On the way up we got a bit off the standard route and ended up bushwacking up a ridge part of the way and lost some time. On the way down we stuck to a well ducked route and made good time.
