suggestions for an easy overnight backpacking trip

I am looking for an easy overnight backpacking trip in the san jacinto area. This will be an introductory backpacking experience, next summer, for teens and pre-teens. We will be car camping in idyllwild.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The easiest would be to drive to palm springs and take the TRAM up and camp at Round Valley in the State Park. Short mileage and little elevation climbing.

But if you are starting in Idyllwild, then then national forest wilderness area would be closer. Park at Humber Park and take Devil's Slide up to Saddle Junction (1600ft climb over 2.5 miles). After this, you've already done the hard part. From there, you have many choices to actually camp at. Camping is done by zones, so when you get your permit you just pick a zone and camp anywhere in it. Law's Camp is a good place since there is a large creek, though any of the meadows are good.

It would be easier to start your hike from the campground you're staying at. If you're near the PCT, there are usually lots of good spots to camp along the trail.
Outdoorsclub.org check it out.
