Whoa! Now I know what all the excitement is about.. !
I had a couple hours to kill in Palm Springs yesterday/ Sunday afternoon. Daughter was at a Cheer Competition at the Convention Center. Looking out the window, all I could see was 5000’ of mountain (the rest shrouded in clouds..).
Never been on the Skyline trail before. As a hiker, I am somewhat coming out of retirement. Over the years, climbing, then trail running, and now mt/ road biking has taken precedence. But as I age and grow heavier and slower, I am re-discovering the appeal of walking.
With my 3 hours of daylight, I sauntered up the Museum Trail. Promptly got lost by making a left turn on the Ramon Trail (Doh!). Passed the various warning signs. Enjoyed the expanding views. Expected rain to hit, but in spite of threatening clouds throughout- the afternoon remained dry.
I was pondering the dichotomy- - a trail runner came by (he’d come up the Ramon Trail). Trail running = carrying almost nothing in terms of clothing. Get up/ get down quick regardless of weather. Versus me hiking with rain gear plus an extra layer. Taking twice the time. But risk reduced if I sprain an ankle; I could spend a comfortable night out. I used to trail run. Blew an ankle 10 years ago and have been conservative ever since. But the lightness and quickness of the run still appeals…. While my reality is heavier is what awaits. Today’s hike was in Saloman trail running shoes. Soon enough I’ll pony up for some mountain boots suitable for crampons. Not eager for the extra weight, but “oh well".
So 8- 11 hours to the Tram at a leisurely pace? Oh My! Cy? When are you taking the gumbies out next? After the snows melt? Sign me up!
And yessssssss. How could I not lust for doing at least the half-Monty (Palm Springs to Summit to Tram)? Or the full Monty (Palm Springs to Summit to Palm Springs).
You are all nuts.
