I had done that trail about 30 years ago, I was looking to do it again this winter/spring. We did it as an overnight camp, then, but I just wanted to do it in one day this time. I have been looking for someone to take the trail with.

I've sorta done it. I did it in the other direction, from 74 down to Palm Canyon. It took about 4 1/2 to 5 hours because it's all pretty much down hill. It was several years ago but at the time the trail was in pretty good shape and easy to follow. There's a middle section that's hiking on the road but other than that it's all trail.

I'd do it again or I could drop you off in the Indian Canyon when I go explore the Bullseye Flat area. Hopefully, that'll be in the next couple weeks

Hal,
My experience with canyon hikes is they can't always stay in the canyon. They go up out of them and back down into them,( frickin waterfalls ). I figured a wash or canyon that long would be going in and out alot ? I hate realizing 1-2 miles to late that I must have missed a turn out.
Do that a few times and you start worrying about daylight on a 15 (?) mile hike.

You mentioned a road...did you go from Dunn road to Portero canyon and into Palm canyon ? Is Dunn the road you mentioned ?

Whether or not the trail goes in and out of the canyon alot is my main concern.

If I remember correctly--it's been a LONG time--the trail mostly follows the canyon in the upper section and then stays on the east slope above the canyon the rest of the way. The road I'm talking about isn't Dunn Road but an old 4WD road along Palm Canyon. It goes on for quite a while. The trail is pretty easy to follow. I managed not to get lost the two times I did it and going down it is easy. It would be interesting to try to do it following the true water course but, like you said, those darn waterfalls get in the way.

Although, I've always wanted to try my hand at a little canyoneering. :D

I remember when I did it we had a group of 5 with 2 children. We went from the top of the canyon to the the bottom at Hermits bench. The little trading post in the Indian Canyons. We started on a ridge trail then went into Palm Canyon and climbed down many many waterfalls.. It cost so much time we showed up after the Canyons had closed and the Agua Calientes were shining their search lights looking for us..... Dont get me wrong - traversing the rocks coming down the Canyon was really fun, but it is time consuming.
This time I was looking to hike from the top down along the ridge and just look into the canyon. I would like to go Saturday or Sunday over the next couple weeks. I also have been trail running alot lately, if someone wants to run instead.

My main goal is to establish the trail again.... It really is a beautiful canyon.

Kevin, I obviously won't be doing the walk this weekend, but I am strongly considering it for next weekend (2-14). I would be open for either direction, although, my main problem is the ride. I can get dropped off up top and get phone reception down in PS to call for a ride. But I seem to have have crappy reception on Hwy 74 , one time I had to walk 6 miles on 74 before I finally got a signal. Don't want to do that again.

A buddy and I hiked about over a year ago. I you have Map Source the trail is shown. It also includes both routes out of the creek bed as you near Hwy 74. We took the eastern one. Its a nice walk in the desert. Plan for lots of sun and very limited water if any. A fair amount of the trail in in a creek bed so expect some soft sand. You might catch site of the long horn cattle that graze the middle section of the hike. If you start to hear bells that would be them.

When I was on the Jo Pond last weekend I saw cow patties. I wondered about that. So there are Longhorns down in the canyon ? How come ?

So it sounds like you hiked up , do you remember how long it took ?
