PCT Hike this weekend

Postby Pup » Fri Aug 01, 2008 2:39 am

My wife and I are starting out at Hwy 74 and backpacking the PCT coming out on Deer Springs Tr. It is her first backpacking trip so we'll take it nice and easy, more of a romantic getaway in the dirt for a few days.
So, like Cy suggested in his previous post, Where are you hiking this weekend?

I think I might run up 395 to do a hike in the Onion Valley or Bishop area on Saturday.

This is a wonderful hike, although it can be warm at the start this time of year. The night views of Palm Springs are fantastic. Enjoy.

If you can, post a note when you get back about water conditions. I track water on the PCT at http://pct.4jeffrey.net but since the thrus are all past the info there is a couple months old.[/url]

Expect heat!

Postby halhiker » Fri Aug 01, 2008 9:18 pm

It will be warm up there this weekend. Really warm. It was 118 here in the desert today and a lot of the area on the PCT faces the desert. I don't know what kind of heat you're used to but my guess is it will be in 90s for the high until you reach Apple Canyon or even beyond. The expected high in Idyllwild Saturday is 90 and that's on the OTHER side of the mountain.

I only WISH I were hiking this weekend. My wife is holding garage sale tomorrow and I get to help my Mom move Sunday and Monday. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I'll get up to the Tram Tuesday. I hope so because it's August and I need a break from the heat.

Check where I live, Hal! 90's sound pretty darn pleasant to me!
My Dad died on Monday, so after this week of getting the estate in order, I need a break from all the task-at-hand.
I just want to take a couple of days and let the wind and the trees talk to me. I'm ready to listen.
You guys/gals have a great weekend
