Hi Tim. Hey, if you're curious about the Hardrock, you'll probably love the Barkley Marathons. Here's a link from an article on the race, but you can google it and get all sorts of crazy stories.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/why-we-c ... ity_1.html

Roughly, it's 5 laps on a 20 mile course with no trail. The article says only 6 guys have ever completed the course, and the race has been going on for over 20 years. it's a quirky race too - the prerace dinner consists of a raw chicken, and the official starting signal is the Race Director lighting a cigarette...you even have to submit an essay to ask them to allow you to get into the race. Sounds like absolute madness. I think we should send in an application for Steve and Fernando, although Ze might like it as well with all that trail-free time!

There are other crazy records too, like the longest distance covered in 24 hours (162.4 miles) and fastest 100 miles (12:27, or 7:28 per mile for 100 straight miles!) Some crazy fun going on out there!

Badwater is a bit on the crazy side... run on the road so hot your shoes melt! You have to stay on the narrow white strip on the edge of the road to avoid the hot blacktop...

...and there is an off trail event out east... horrendous conditions... most years there is never a finisher... but, that is the world of extreme ultra-endurance.. as hikers, we get to enjoy some of the scenery we pass through...

Ultra running is a growing sport, and California is the place to be to get in on the most events... a good endurance hiker can enjoy fair success at those events, simply because we do so well on the upgrades. Fifteen years ago it was mostly marathon runners coming to try their hand at the longer distances. Now, the specialist have entered the sport and it is a different world. I managed to come in first place on a fifty mile run in 1998... now, I would be mid pack if I were lucky. It is a more supportive, more fun group than the normal marathon mindset...

im,

1st place in a 50 mile --wow.

San Jacinto is so unique in its steepness and variety of terrain and climate and plantlife in such a small horizontal distance. Thats why it is fun, easy to get to.

I have a friend that finished Bad Water in 2000.
When I see all of the utras available now it amazes me.

Out of my League-lol

Not what it sounds like... I had never run over 15 miles before, and that distance only once, the weekend before the event. Day of the race I was the slowest off the start, did not catch anyone for 5 miles. I stopped at every rest stop and ate hardy... and was run/walking along, taking my time. The initial 15 miles was up hill including the first of a long, steeper climb of 2,000'+... I passed everyone on that first climb, not because I was fast, but because they all ran themselves into the ground! There was a total of over 8,000' of climbing on that course, and I was trained up to do 12,000' climbs on my hiking, so no problem. It did feel great to be winning an event at age 50, but if viewed correctly it was very much about who was not there that day... I was still fresh as a daisy at the end of the event, even after getting lost and running an additional three miles! Road a century bike ride the next day.

A day like that will not happen again... ultra's have come into their own...

fun stuff

dang... spending some very interesting time now with a bout of "chicken pox", or at least the old folks version. Looks like I may not make it out this spring... oh, well... as long as the mountain hangs around to the fall. See you guys in November.

Instead of hiking three skylines in a day (36 miles), wouldnt it be more interesting to do the iron-baldy traverse, or maybe white mountain from owens?

The skyline three times in a row sounds a bit repetitive to me and perhaps boring. Dont get me wrong, i really enjoy the torture of c2c, but apparently not as much as some folks on here though

hi marmot,

i would love to do the iron baldy traverse...let me know when you want to do it, i have been wanting to do that for some time.

as far as the b2b2b, i am going to hold off on it until november. i think there will be snow up there still may 1st which might be an issue for some. i am booked for mt. hood may 13-16th and don't want to risk injury because the whole trip is paid for. i think doing a yearly b2b2b on skyline will be more fun for people as well.
