Thinking About Doing Skyline...

General Palm Springs area.

Postby 63ChevyII » Wed Dec 05, 2012 12:56 pm

I'm not sure if this will be helpful to anyone else, buthere is the 'map' I'm taking with me Saturday. What I'll do is print it on paper or cardstock, cover both sides of the paper with packing tape, then cut the paper to size. It gives the map enough durability to last mulitple hikes.

The mileages and route is based on what I tracked with my phone, so with another device you likely won't get the same numbers, however it could still be used as a reference.

As far as the timing stuff goes, that is based on my own observation of my two trips up Skyline and guesstimating from there.

skyline

It's helpful for me because I like to know what everyone is talking about on the trail. In terms of Halleluja rocks, I had envsioned this as the rock formation at the beginning of the traverse, but I was just guessing. Just what are the Halleluja rocks, how do you recognize them? Do you have a spot for the Enchanted Gardens? Never Ending Ridge? Again I have an idea but it's more of a guess, and as you see I've been wrong before.

Thanks

Never Ending Ridge?
You will know the Never Ending Ridge when you think it's never ending!

Does anyone have a suggestion for a cheap hotel Friday night?

The Cambridge Inn is clean and run by a nice little older couple. $39 for the night, which was cheap enough that I didn't mind spending it. I hate to blow $100 just for a place to crash for a few hours before getting an early start. Hope to see you out there.

Dang you zip....you come out on a weekend that I'm gone intentionally?

Do I smell too much on the trail?

Do me a favor, skip skanky..go out to the point there in the saddle and take your old cut..its actually more fun.

I plan to start from Ramon, but at ~0400. Good luck!

Yeah, everybody says that the part after Flat Rock is the tough stuff.

You bet it does. Think of me while you're in DV. Hope you're doing a first down a canyon (or something equally fun).

NICE map. Any way to print it so it spans two 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper? If I shink it to fit one sheet of paper, I think it will be too small to be helpful.

No, it's not intentional. You never said what you're doing out there...my schedule is freeing up a bit, we'll have to do that xc route on San G or some other off trail adventure together before the weather gets hot. We should be able to do quite a few actually...pm me if you've got ideas...

Yes.

I do skip skanky. My route is slower but I like the fact that it's hidden and leaves no trace.

Given your knee the Ramon route is much preferred. You might enjoy the super steep, almost stone stair climb up from the museum if you were doing it just up to the picnic tables as a training exercise, but it probably wouldn't be a good idea before a longer trip.

Steve's right, but you can mitigate that somewhat.

Most people stop for a while at Flatrock and refresh a bit, getting something to eat and drink and letting their legs recover some of their vigor.

Then, coming up out of Flatrock, understand that the part in the manzanita is steeper than it looks, so your pace will and should drop at that point. The first few times I did Skyline I didn't realize that and it was kind of demoralizing.

Also, don't look at your elevation again on a GPS, no matter how tempting it might be, until you are standing at Grubb's Notch. If you do, your first thought is going to be, "You gotta be kidding me...That's all?" Don't look.

Should be a great time. See you out there!

That's a nice map. But you probably won't need it.
