I ate at the restaurant once and the food was awful; sent one back as the meat was not cooked. I have no experience of jail food though, and, come to think of it, am not sure I've ever met anyone before who could comment on it...yikes!

The tram restaurant has the worst food I have ever tasted, outside of hospitals and jails.

I'll go ahead and take Cynthia's comment as the truth-based joke it was intended to be...However, a few years ago we did the Dine n' Ride to the tram station, and I had the best darn prime rib ever! It was delicious! I have to assume that it was some sort of fluke 'cause all I've been able to enjoy up there as of late is the beer...

Oh, errr....well, as far as my (brief) sojourns in state-run institutions, I'll just say that they were always completely voluntary .... and I can say with actual certainty that the tram food is definitely worse than the end-of-the-month offerings at the San Luis Obipso County Jail--but, I will grudgingly add, is not quite as bad as what was on the menu at the San Francisco County Jail. (as far as correctional institutions go, I believe it rates a "Black Hole Star" on the Michelin Guide.) As for Desert Regional Medical Center, a place in which I have been incarcerated thrice--the lime jello is palatable. And that is all ... And I believe I will leave Ellen Coleman to explicate further on the worst food she's ever had, which, I'm guessing, is the Mt. San Jacinto Bed and Breakfast. No bed, no breakfast!

We obviously need a separate thread on Hut, Tram, jail, and hospital food.

I would have added airline food, but young people here won't even remember what that was.

And don't forget military "C" Rations (now I'm really dating myself -- "C" Rations were replaced by MRE's about 25 years ago). The canned cold scrambled eggs with water. Almost made me defect to the Soviet Union ... although the canned fruit cocktail and canned applesauce was really quite good.

Jim -- You can undoubtedly produce a list of the disadvantages of defecting, and we're all glad you stuck with our side. I don't think that ration quality was a reason to go over. I have several Russian colleagues (all US citizens or Green Card holders these days) who did some time in the Soviet military. They will not let any US claim of having worse food go uncontested.

According to our trainers, there was a bit of a weight problem in the Soviet Union at the time. Soviet recruits were fed only cabbage and potatoes until they reached the desired weight. If I remember correctly, their daily ration was about 800 calories. Most of us here in the US probably eat more than that per meal.
