I was once a program director of a cardiac rehab program for individuals with coronary heart disease (stable angina, heart attack, bypass surgery).

When a patient asked whether it was safe to have sex, the standard answer was: "Yes, as long as you can walk up two flights of stairs without experiencing chest pain or extreme shortness of breath."

My favorite response: one of my male patients looked me right in the eye and said dryly: "I can take my time going up two flight of stairs."
Given my -7 fitness level, my wife is going to be really glad to hear this.

There are relatively few heat related deaths.

"In 2011, the most dangerous place to be was in a
permanent home, likely with little or no air conditioning"

relatively few in CA, outdoors.

Correction on 1-8-12. Times were 3:41,3:38. Really happy about this particular double skyline. As it was my 1st and only negitive split. I started keeping track of all my workouts, hikes & races this year because I was curious why I don't have a life....now I know!

For those who aren't sure what Fern is talking about, he did Skyline twice, back-to-back, each one in about 3 1/2 hours. For me, if I could do one Skyline in 7 hours, I'd be ecstatic. It's speeds like this that cause Ellen to joke that Fern has "speedy Alien DNA" -- 'cause speeds like that surely aren't human.

When you can match those speeds, you go right ahead and do Skyline in the heat. Start early, and then out run the rising sun. For the rest of us, it's better to wait until October or so when things cool down.

Fern, run-on sentences or not, your response was perfect. Thank you! This is exactly what I think the board needs, or, rather, what the casual reader to the board needs--a dose of realism. Seeing your (holy @#$%!) training schedule in black and white like this really clarifies what people would need to do to reach your level of fitness--and to attempt the kind of hikes you do. Being a super fit hiker like Fern is, aside from some natural talent, largely a matter of putting in many many long hours of very hard work. I think beginning hikers don't necessarily understand the sheer amount of time the elite hikers put in, and just think "what's the big deal? I jog three times a week/ride my bike to work/do the stairmaster twice a week. I'm sure I can manage some stupid day hike."

What about some other fast hikers posting their average schedule or weekly mileage? Bluerail, Hal, Ellen, Zip, Ze, and many others on here? I think this is incredibly helpful.
