It might not turn them around, but it'll probably make them depressed!

Most hikers would think that's pretty funny, and at the same time it would scare some people when they glance at how much water they have used already and how much water they have left.

I think that Perry is on to something. But I propose, for the exact same location:
You have climbed 500 feet!
Only 7500 feet to go!

That may stop some people.

I'm surprised there isn't a life insurance kiosk set up at the trailhead by now!

In my opinion that trail is such a mental endeavor, that posting constant elevation signs would wear a person out more quickly than anything, and make them realize what they're up against. Not to mention the benefit in referencing their water.

I cant imagine a Trail Closed sign is going to keep people away.

I think they already tried that in Snow Creek.

Hey! I know! Let's sell the trailhead to the DWA!

Jim, that has got to be one of the best posts that has appeared on this board. I laughed all the way home from work. Just because somebody puts a sign up doesn't mean people are going to obey it - and IMHO it doesn't even mean they necessarily should obey it. Steve's my hero.

Glad a few folks liked my comment about closing the trailhead. I chuckled as I posted that. :)

Now there's a thought. That's gotta be pretty sobering when you look at your 2/3 empty water bottle.
