Hal, I think you're just getting old, welcome to the club.
Maybe we can get out soon and smell the "roses". :)

Happy Trails

someone told me the difference between a trail runner and a road runner, the roadie goes outside to run, while the trail runner runs to get out there.
while I'm not that big on running, I do feel if I am faster I can surely cover more ground and see more. Also, doing fast paced workouts, or better yet, steep hill climbs, allows me the physical abilities to do trips that I would most likely not have the strength and stamina to otherwise do.

simple stuff like being able to take a sunday morning trip up to Forest Falls and going to sleep on a rock in the sun in such a wonderful, beautiful and somewhat remote place, is a great pay off. If not for trips up the bump and hurrying up plenty of other trails, I would in no way have the physical stamina to do this as if it were nothing.

...and today it was all britlebush, no roses.

I have no qualms with you using B&G as a gym. That's about all it's good for.

However, when I hear people talk about it as a destination hike it kinda burns me up. If a visitor is sent there rather than to some place like the Indian Canyons or the Art Smith Trial or Joshua Tree they will miss out on some of the great places this area has to offer and will end up walking up a road. I guess being in the hotel business I care about this.

It also makes me unhappy that local governments would spend a PENNY on this trail. It's not worth it and takes valuable resources from other places that need them.

I whole heartedly agree with you there Hal. and they have spent money. What the hell is that bench thing they put in there ? and all the money they spent with those gates up top trying to keep people out ? and it would be a horrible place to hike for anything other than a workout.

btw..you can go off trail up any of the ridges and find plenty buzz tails when the the weather is right.

Thanks for the additional info on "cardiac", the southerly trail up the BnG.
Good quick hard burn and then went off trail at the traverse...up a steep wash arriving at the BnG turnaround. Nice w/o while wife went $hoping!

I love the Bump and Grind! It's pretty steep, especially if you take the trail to the left of the Mike Schuler Trail and I get a great workout on it. Training on the B&G helped get me up Skyline. But it is pretty crowded in the evenings. When I go at prime time, I'll see at least 40 cars parked there. I've never considered it a "hike" though. For me it's more like a conditioning trail. And as for rattle snakes...I've seen lots of them there right on or next to the trail.

As far as short hikes go, bng is the best.

Steepest trail in the valley
best location, I can do it on my way home from work
nice easy road to go down for those whose knees dont like down
most pretty girls of any trail

Maybe you are getting old Hal!

seems every city in SoCal has their own Bump N' Grind..I live about 2 minutes away from Riversides..luckily for me there is a dirt trail that goes straight up the side so I can miss the hoardes that go up the concrete trail..
