I tried to mention a familiar trail (Vivian), a shorter alternative (see below) and a hard workout, to see what would be best. I'm fine either way.

In response to your question, yes, it's about 16 miles roundtrip, but it's much easier than Skyline. Remember, it only goes up a little over half of what Skyline does, and the return trip is all smooth downhill on a nice dirt trail in a cool forest...

Perhaps an alternative would be to do Limberpine Bench, which has a stunning view almost as nice as the peak and is just 12 miles round trip, with only about 3300 feet elevation gain? I seldom go to the peak, as the best view is actually about 7 miles up at the stone bench just before Washington Monument. That might be an alternative as well.

How does that sound?

How far was it again from the driveway to your refrigerator ? Maybe that would be enough distance .

I think this is a great idea.

It might be useful to specify a time for "Party Time at Zip's House" (presumably the earliest time you want people to actually show up). That would help people put constraints on the hiking part.

In my experience, if you want to do a group hike and actually stay together, the pace will be impossible to plan. It's basically "go as slow as the slowest person" and one does not know in advance what that pace will be. One can break up into smaller groups, start slower/faster groups at different times, let chaos reign, etc. It would be nice to give people some advance idea of what they're in for.

I hope to do the 9 peaks challenge with my regular hiking buddy. Sounds fun and it'll be my first time doing that. :D
Stood alone on a mountain top, starin' out at the great divide. I could go east, I could go west. It was all up to me to decide.

Nine Peak Challenge consists of these peaks in the San Gorgonio Wilderness:

From west to east, they are San Bernardino Peak, San Bernardino Peak East, Anderson Peak, Shields Peak, Alto Diablo (a curious "pile of rocks" not recognized by the U.S. Geological Survey, but recognized by the Boy Scouts of America and many "locals"), Charlton Peak, Little Charlton Peak, Jepson Peak, and Mt. San Gorgonio.

I'm working as quickly as I can! Here's my thought:

Establish a date that most everyone can go. Check.

Establish a route that allows everyone to participate at some level. In Progress.

I'm thinking we need a rough finishing time for the hike (which becomes the starting time at my house) but that will be determined by the route.

Is everyone good with the Limber Pine/Washington Monument/San Bernardino Peak alternative? That allows 3 different distances, and we can all go at various paces, arriving back at the trailhead at some roughly appointed time. Did everyone want to do Vivian again? Or, like Bluerail, did everyone just want to hike up the driveway?

After we have the route, setting the times and what everyone will bring should be easy. For now, mark the 27th on your calendars, put in your vote on a route, and we'll have a route determined in no time. After that, I'll post a sign-up thread so everyone can post what they'll bring without having to scroll down through this topic.
