Florian's cache

General Palm Springs area.

Halhiker is acclimated to the heat. The body is able to adapt to the heat but it takes time. Hikers coming into the desert and believing that because they are in shape its okay are risking a lot. I've seen Marines brought to 29 Palms from cooler bases drop out in the first week of arrival. Given 2 weeks to climatize and they are ready to start building their desert legs.

Its one of the reasons the Corps sends them to 29 Palms before going to the Middle East.

Not sure if this will save somebody. Maybe it will... I have to agree with Kathy that nobody should assume the water will be there. If you expect it to be there and it's not: you're f'd!

The safest way to do Skyline this time of year is to bring 2 gallons of water and some form of salt and carbohydrates. Putting the water in the freezer the night before is nice. The worst that can happen is you have to wait for it to melt. Won't take long.

I'm the guy who usually doesn't like ducks, except for once in a blue moon.

Sorry buddy, I somehow missed that question. Yes I was up monday morning, trying to use every bit of this wonderful weather before it's real different. Your cache was sittin just like you left it. Hopefully it will remain like that for a long time, your placement was really good, shaded spot, almost forcibly in view.

There are water caches all throughout the desert areas around the border, they are put there not to entice people to cross the border and make their way through the desert. They are put there simply to save lives. Often they have a tall pipe with a banner on them so they can be seen from a distance.

...then again, maybe the word has spread to the point where it's relied upon when folks are crossing the desert. what a dilemma. :? Because quite often they are bone dry.

No matter what...I'm not gonna call you Flo.

I visit the Anza-Borrego desert often. Was just camping there last night and hiked some near Pyramid Peak this morning. A few years ago there were big blue water barrels about one every half mile along the roads in the southern part of the park. Was nuts. Anyone could easily walk from water barrel to barrel and not even have to think about preparation. Most of them are gone now. I'm for saving lives and all but that many barrels was crazy.

And thanks for not calling me Flo.

Gotta watch that bluerail character, he'll turn on ya in an instant!

By the way, I have some suggestions for improving the cache so that no one complains:

1. Can you say refrigeration? I bet bluerail is good with electricity . . . he could run an extension cord down from the tram!

2. Variety is a definite issue at this point. Perhaps icees, some nice imported beers, and Otter Pops would be a handy addition as well.

3. Optional free helicopter rides down - without the embarrassment of having to call SAR! How cool would that be! Ask Tina if she knows any pilots that might be willing to help out!

4. How about an escalator above Flatrock...the tram was already talking about an escalator on the other side, why not a matching pair?

5. This one will be a big hit. Everybody loves that recording that they play on the way down in the tram. If we could get a recording of that and play it incessantly, no one would ever get stuck on the trail for long! Of course, they might have to jump off a cliff, but they wouldn't stay there.

6. Just in case they close the wilderness, how about a giant slide that would run down to Soak City. You could be back and cooled down in about 2 minutes! I'd be willing to skip the tram and pay them my $11.00!

Just some passing thoughts. Help to keep the naysayers quiet out there.
