Anybody doing Skyline on Saturday, 9/27?

Howdy All

I bailed on Skyline yesterday -- too hot. Wound up hiking San Bernardino peak in San Gorgonio. It was even toasty on that trail and I started at 6 AM. Now that I read the posts (Sunday AM) I know why I didn't see Z-dude or Kathy. Did the three of you (Z, Kathy, and Tina) see each other?

Karin and I did the lolipop loop last Sunday and ran into Rick Graham at the top of San Gorgonio. It was nice to catch up -- I haven't seen him since Cy and I hiked Baldy via Bear Canyon last year in September. He hiked with us down to South Fork Springs, at which point we stopped and I soaked my unhappy ankle (new boots -- returning them).

I'm headed off to the Grand Canyon on Tuesday to attempt my second rim to rim to rim with my Pike's Peak friend Lynn. Thanks again to Kathy for including me last year so that I know how to arrange the trip

I hope that the weather will permit a Skyline hike on October 11.

I ran into Zip when he was on his way down from San Gorgonio yesterday. I did a modified lollipop loop starting along Frog Creek instead of the South Fork Trailhead and then then dropping down from the summit of San Gorgonio via a chute to near Mine Shaft Saddle instead of taking the trail down from the summit; so my loop was probably 5 miles shorter than the standard loop.

Saturday was a perfect day in the wilderness.

Kathy: I did the loop in the opposite direction, though I didn't go up the chute by the airplane wreckage. Actually, I didn't even realize that was possible. I saw your pics on the San G board - did you take any of the wreckage?

Ellen: Yes, the San B trail can be a bit warm - too bad you didn't do San G! You'd have felt right at home, as we had a bit of a reunion up there. I saw WP and a couple of his friends, Tinaballina and a few of her friends, and then on the way back down Kathy and I saw each other at the Dollar Lake Saddle. Fun and good fortune to you in the GC - hoist a cold one for me on the far rim!

Tinaballina: It was great to see you up on San G. Hey, in your post it says you'll be with "four other guys and a blond girl". Hmmm. Shouldn't that be "one other blond girl and four guys"? Or is there something you need to tell us?

WP: It was fun talking with you guys at the peak. Post when you guys are thinking about Skyline and we can set it up to go. Do Ryan and Derek run about the same times you do?

Perry: You think you can get up early enough to do Skyline with WP and me? We'd start about 5:00 a.m., so you'd need to set at least 3 alarms!

Zip - Yes, I know you went the other way - you sure went up fast to be coming down at the time I met you. Actually, the chute I take down brings me back to the trail closer to Mine Shaft Saddle than where the wreckage is. The chute that hits the trail where the wreckage is would probably be okay to go down too, but I sure wouldn't want to go up either unless they were full of snow - it would be so much work in that loose scree - coming down it's just a ski most of the way down - about 1/2 hour to get down to Mine Shaft Saddle area from the summit via the chute if you're comfortable on that kind of loose crap.

My son and I went up the chute form the werckage on July 4th weekend in 2006. It wasn't so bad -- I'd do it again. No snow, though! I thought we did it on your advice, but I may be having a "senior moment" on this one. It would be more fun going down.

it was great seeing you. yes, i guess there were two blonde girls, myself included, i overlooked that one...lol

it was freezing at the top, we hung out for a bit but i was so cold. i used my extra pair of gloves as mittens until we hit lower ground. good hike though.

if you start saturday at 5am i won't see you on skyline, i am probably starting at 7am.

So that 25-mile deal is called the "Lollipop Loop?" That just kicked my ass on Thursday! The Sky High Trail was incredible, but I had to stop 5 times to pull rocks out of my shoes.

What day are you guys going? I would have to set my watch alarm, alarm clock, cell phone alarm, and set a timer on a lamp with all 4 bulbs turned on and tilt the lampshade so it blasts light in my face...

Yeah, that's a long one, especially now that the road to Poopout Hill is closed.

"Lollipop Loop" has been cropping up here and there although I had never heard that moniker before this year. I've always called it the Dry-Dollar Loop, but I don't think that's widely recognized nomenclature either.
