It seem's somebody say's something like there was fire on Devils slide it get's to the next person and it changes into something bigger and on and on the rumers fly. Atleast that's how it's been all week were I'm sitting right now wrighting this at home in Idyllwild. I don't know what to belive anymore even the fire maps and diffrent web site and pretty much everybody we have talked too all week have had confliting story's. So I'm just beliveing what I'm Seeing. By the way no fire on Devils Slide today that I know of? A DC 10 did drop a load of retardent close to there yesterday and we could see it from town but I think they were just trying to get ahead of the game?

Thanks Backwoods for the eye on the scene view! Good to hear that nothing visible, lets hope it stays that way. Stay safe up there.

It was mentioned that the map showed a new hot spot on what appears to be Devil's Slide. I don't think we're rumor mongering. It was reported that they were going to try and lay down retardant in the area to block the fire from moving towards the village.

Appreciate the "eyes on the ground" reports!

Is there an updated version of this map? I'm hoping the fire stops along that north ridgeline. The best chance to stop it will be there, as fire tends to move much more slowly downhill. I'm really hoping it doesn't destroy any more timber areas. If it gets a chance to overrun the forested high country the results will be catastrophic.

Oh no. It appears to have updated when I reposted it and it looks like the fire has already spread down the ridge and across the flat and is poised to make a run up to Hidden Divide. I hope I'm wrong on that.

Edit: Well, looks a lot better now!

Both the Long Valley and valley station cams are failing to connect now.

Just wanted to thank all the posters on this thread. We have a cabin in upper Fern Valley and this thread has the best fire information and links I've found.

It's hard being down here at work in Loma Linda, but reassuring to hear the tankers going by overhead. I know many, many folks are up there doing their best to keep this fire away from town. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.

30% chance of rain each day for the next 3 days.
Would rather have 90% chance tomorrow.

Those hotspots far outside of the perimeter could be controlled burns perhaps.

Sorry guy's I'm a bit on edge today.
Here's how my week has been. Last weekend I went to Las Vegas for 2 nights for my son wedding = little sleep. My son lives in Cat city so Monday I hiked home from the tram I live on the far end of Idyllwild towards Hemet so I use Erny Maxwell trail to get here after coming down D slide about 1 mile from home my brother call me worry'd becouse he knows I'm hiking home and ask's if I know there is a fire I say no. I get to the road and he's there and we drive to go check it out at that point it's burning alot closer to my house than it is now but was only still small compaird to the next day. That night very little sleep but it burned away from us and Tahquitz became a buffer between us. It's starting to be kind of a blur thinking back on it now I was pretty tired by then. I think it stayd down low and PS got all the smoke. Tue's the rumers started flying everything from they are shutting off the elitricty to it jumping the ridge and everything inbtween. I'm keeping a close watch on the fire and finely get to sleep at 2:30am then at 3"30am the sherrif's ring my doorbell and tell me there is a Mandatory evacuation but I don't have to leave if I dont want to so I tell them I'm staying they take my name and ask me who my dentist is. I could be a day off on all this I just check'd my phone and for some reason I thought it was Thursday, Anyway let's skip wensday whatever day it was i was worying and watching just like all week and got 2 hours sleep I know that becouse last night I got a wonderfull 10 hour's of sleep I have been an endurance athlete for ove 20 years and I was beat down like I just did a ultra marathon 1200k cycling event. on one of these day's the smoke turned for the first time and everybody including myself freaked out it was all red and and up to 25k' keep in mind that as of right now 3:30 friday afternoon we haven't seen ANY flames here in IDY other than when it first started. Thursday we went to the press confrence talk about rumers the head fire lady said she was concernd about burning embers landind in town and one of the reporters not 2 minutes later say's so you said the town was in the path of the fire and is going to burn when do you expect this to happen. Man she gave him a look that would send a bear running and pretty much told him off. So today's friday and it's pretty much the same the fire has gotten bigger but isen't on the IDY side of the mountains all my important stuff is still sitting in the back of the truck ready to go our house was built in 2007 so it might make it if the worst happens I have a case of blockade fire retardent all set up and ready to spray the place if we have to bail and I just cut all the weeds last week. As for our beutifull forest that hasent burned for over 130 years I have cryed more than once for this week but now I'm trying to think piositive about it growing back and not about how I will miss it. Well there's a long ass mixed up not spell checked report on the life of a Idyllwild resedent that dident evacuate for ya it's time to go look at the mountains like I do about every hour.

cynthia23 wrote:Looked again at the Modis map. It updates about every hour or so. At least according to Modis, there's actually an outbreak of fire on Devil's Slide, quite near to Humber Park. As I said, hopefully the map is inaccurate, or it's an outlier they can quickly get control of.

Keep in mind that MODIS doesn't have very sharp resolution. What you're seeing as dots are actually center points for 1km wide "pixels". Also, there's potential for false positives... that Devil's Slide point only shows a confidence of "86" whereas most of the points in the fire show a confidence of "100".
