Fire in Mountain Center darkens Palm Springs ...

General Palm Springs area.

Thanks Cy! You have some great shots on there.

Looked again at the Modis map. It updates about every hour or so. At least according to Modis, there's actually an outbreak of fire on Devil's Slide, quite near to Humber Park. As I said, hopefully the map is inaccurate, or it's an outlier they can quickly get control of.

Looking up from Palm Springs on Fri morning there appears to be smoke coming from Hidden Divide and Desert View area.

Idyllwild scares me because its physical situation reminds me of the Oakland Hills firestorm and the tragic loss of life there. But here, at least, they have plenty of warning and a large concentration of firefighting resources already in place. I think they'll be able to keep the situation under control and keep Idyllwild safe. Still, let's keep our thoughts and prayers with Idyllwild.

Long time reader, first time poster. I planned on introducing myself to this wonderful board this evening after taking my wife for her first trip to Carumba via Devils Slide, and doing a detailed water report. Obviously that didn't happen and as a firefighter for CalFire I have had to watch the firefight from the sidelines being off duty. This breaks my heart seeing this wonderful area burn. This forum has been excellent on information and updates. To update the situation, evacuation orders have now been issued for Pine Cove, this fire is just romping. Pray for rain, or do a rain dance. This weekend will be very interesting.

The interactive fire map now shows pretty major fire action in the Tahquitz Creek drainage (Skunk Cabbage Meadow, Laws, Caramba, etc.). With the kind of heat intensity displayed, the trees are most likely burning. :(

I've been checking this cam for a bit now ( http://www.pstramway.com/long-valley-cam.html ) and it went from being sunny this morning to pretty grim now.. We could even see some smoke earlier it looked like. For those interested to monitor...

Edit: Well, looks a lot better now!

Having talked to some friends working on the fire, it has been very intense and very destructive. Not just the ground fuels on this one.
