Doesn't look good for either of those teams this year but that's OK because I have a life and don't worry about such trivial things too much.

And, of course, USC hasn't played Stanford yet.

One more thing.

Guess I'll have to cheer for OU this year.

Maybe we can agree on one thing. I HATE all the Big Ten and SEC teams. I get so sick of all those guys on ESPN loving the SEC. I don't even watch.

Cairns/ducks

Postby tkvance » Tue Sep 23, 2008 12:24 pm

I look at cairns/ducks as a physical defacement of nature---similar to carving a name on a tree (obviously, different degrees, but the same principal)----leave no trace is a good policy, and leaving a cairn/duck is absolutely against the leave no trace principles.

Possibly the only way this would be acceptable is if you are SERIOUSLY lost and need to leave a pointer to rescue personnel---but then, you should go back and scatter the cairn after you are rescued.

Do you leave boot/shoe prints when you hike?

I'm one post and out on this one, but its a little funny how long a discussion there was about whether or not you should leave a pile of rocks showing you how to get to the pile of rocks (from the OP). Just an observation.

Ok, fight on, let me remind you the old Scout adage and Leave No Trace line---leave only footprints, take only pictures (memories). Nature would be a whole lot more natural if this were the case.

Rock piles placed on the trail are a nuisance, and not a natural part of nature. People who think like you are the same ones who painted dots on the C2C trail a while back---people who can't figure out with a map/compass/gps how to get to where they want to go. We should also have a water fountain at the top, since it makes it easier to drink water, have an escalator, and maybe even have a neon sign that points the way to the top.

They probably also took the tram, because it was too long of a hike from one of the trailheads.

Respect the outdoors, and leave your man-made additions off the trail whenever possible.

Ask yourself, would you carve your name in a tree, too, showing that you had been there? A rock pile is thinking along the same lines. Not as permanent, of course, but if everyone did it, think what the trail would look like.

I went to the top of San Jacinto a few weeks ago, for the first time. I had no trouble finding the summit, but I was happy there was a small rock pile to show the way to some slabs that were an easier way to the top. It really has nothing to do with maps or getting lost, in fact a map would not have helped at all since it was only a few feet from one way up to the others.

I am not young anymore and anything that points out the easier way with less stress on my knees is appreciated.
