That's very interesting that gasoline was actually more expensive in 1918 than it is today. How did the US ever succeed? With prices like that, the US must have been a backward, impoverished country during most of the 20th Century.

Interesting to think about as the current administration talks about the "necessity" of drilling in the ANWR. Not that I have an opinion about that of course. :D
