Well, not to be negative, but I think it's pretty well established that in fact that is NOT what is happening. People are taking things for convenience.

I agree with you Jim. I know its a somewhat cynical stance and I'd like to think believe that my fellow man is better than that but... The realist in me would bet that the vast majority of the takers are non-emergency users. I'm not doubting that they really need the supplies, I just doubt that they need the supplies to self extricate themselves. My guess would be that more often than not, people are under-prepared and instead of turning around, they continue on their way with the help of these angel boxes.

That said, I feel that my call for Giarida infused Water would solve the problem.

"As a life saving measure, please help yourself to this EMERGENCY water. However as soon as you're off the mountain you'll need to seek immediate medical attention and treatment for Giardisis"

May add pause to the casual taker don't you think? *Note, for those without a sense of humor, this is meant as a joke, albeit likely very functional.

Proof? (I'm not claiming the boxes have not been vandalized before ...) and neither negative or positive, but fair; an assumption of Innocence rather than
a conviction of guilt (which is pass the point of suspicion)...a long way to go for a free granola bar.
Maybe we should advertise the rescue boxes as 'free goodies here' to end the confusion.
The danger facing skyline is our access being denied.
Those rescue boxes? (rare things in of themselves), fodder for alarmists, unproven record for actual effects.
Not the spirit. Not the nature. Seems even the inept carry cell phones to get 'rescued'.
Cameras just an overkill, IMO.
Much respect Jim
Spirit affords all allowances of nature.

Well, maybe. But it sure seems funny that they need restocking so often. There are that many people getting into trouble? Every week? Really? I find that hard to believe.

By the way, I agree the access issue is really worrisome.

It is known that a group that got rescued had planned to use the rescue box supplies as part of their hiking strategy. Maybe the rescue boxes have helped people in bad situations, but we just don't know about it.

I think the key is leaving foods that are not very appealing but still useful in an emergency. When Ellen got stuck in the peak shelter during a snowstorm years ago, she ate sardines because that was one of the few items that people didn't touch. When I've left pretzels at rescue box 1 last year they seemed to stay there a long time. I think it was some generic value brand without any fancy flavoring.

Unfortunately water is a hot item. It has been suggested that we add a little dirt in it (I think Bluerail's idea). I suggested adding iodine tablets for purification so that nobody gets sick. Recently I've been thinking about food coloring. Whatever the creative method, a note explaining what's in it and why would help a person in desperate need and discourage the others who are deciding whether to continue hiking up or just like to be comfortable.

It was disappointing that somebody grabbed the airtight plastic containers that I left. I can only speculate about their reasons. The purpose was to keep ants out of the food which is a problem sometimes. Maybe with ants all over the rescue box the food will actually last longer.

Yeah, hard to assume the best when people are stealing the very containers themselves. :(

This thread was started to help the mounted police as we are trying to just keep an eye on what people are putting in as we are not always passing those boxes. If people feel that private messaging me the details of the boxes installed of posting i am okay with that.

Thanks

I might head up C2C tomorrow and I'm happy to run supplies up to the boxes, Sherpa-style. I'd appreciate suggestions on needed supplies. It's my experience that 90% of the time people fail to consume enough electrolytes so those, along with water would be my top choices for resupplies. Food is *never* necessary but makes people feel better, I realize.

I understand the desire to deter people from taking supplies outside of an emergency situation and I'm open to suggestions--iodine or food coloring in the water--?

Shoot, I hope people out there do read this thread. Maybe it will dawn on them that when they take things for convenience that they just might be condemning someone who really needs it to death.
