Whether to Do C2C on Saturday the 30th?

General Palm Springs area.

Chevy, thanks for posting the nifty graph. NOW I know why Baldy via Bear Canyon kicks my butt!

Arose, although I haven't been past the tram in over a month I'm quite sure micros should be sufficient. Micros will also be nice to have on Skyline's traverse and the switchbacks below Grubbs Notch.

No problem! I want to make a similar graph comparing a few of the routes up Baldy. I haven't done Register Ridge yet and want that to be part of the graph.

Register Ridge is steep too, but it starts out at a higher elevation, thus lowering the "butt kicking quotient."

Hello-Chevy, thanks for that wonderful graphic. What a clear way to put those hikes in perspective.

I thoroughly embarrassed myself my first time on Bear Canyon, trying to keep up with some mountain bikers that wanted to 'try out' hiking. I got the worst cramps I've ever had.

I went back the following weekend (just me and my dog) and I improved my ascent time by 45 mins. I froze on the way up, only spending 5 mins at the top. By the time I finished though, the sun was blazing and I cooked on the way down. (pics here).

In your opinion, how does Register Ridge compare to going up Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail?

No problem Robert. I want my father-in-law to hike Whitney with me next year. Thus far, he hasn't been affected by altitude, but is still a bit intimidated by the hike. I thought the graph would add some perspective for him. He has hiked C2C & Mt. Washington with me, as well as routes up Baldy and San G that aren't shown on the graph.

I also would love to see your ski hut and register ridge graph along with Bear Canyon.

Register Ridge is very steep and burns the whole way up but felt very short when you top out at Devils backbone. To try and think of a way to compare them for me...... I have gone down them all and disliked going down RR the most (steep and loose trail). BC I thought was is in great trail condition but steep and longer. Ski Hut up and down easiest other than the masses of people but I usually start so early I only see them going down. My preference would be up RR and down SH

Just my rambling 2 cents.

Chevy, although I have gone up RR, BC, and even the Bowl in snow with crampons many times, I have never gone all the way UP on Ski Hut trail! But we usually go DOWN via Ski Hut.

One time Ellen and I went up RR and when we got to the ridge on Devils Backbone the wind was blowing so hard that we had to abort and retreat back down RR, -not really a fun way to go down!

The first time I went up BC, we went down Ski Hut - that wasn't much fun, but it was better than my trip down BC! I would image RR would be a bit intimidating!

I was thinking of doing Register Ridge tomorrow, but the guy I am hiking with doesn't have microsprikes. I am guessing they would be good to have this time of year. Oh well, we'll just have to Skyline instead!

I found a GPX file for Register Ridge and created a trail profile. I've started a new thread with the graph for those that are interested:
