Perry, probably about a 1/4 teaspoon in a bottle...simply a pinch. Sits in the bottom of the bottle, if you were in trouble, I can pretty much guaranty you would drink it...the problem is those people that realize after they have been hiking an hour that they missed judged things and need some extra water to make the hike..like you said zip, its not a grey area...the boxes are for people that are truly in trouble..

What has been really good to see is that there are more people starting to take water TO the boxes....its a good addition to a workout anyway..

reminds me of a backpacker who always brought dry dog food as emergency supplies, so none of the other guys would steal it.

That's an excellent idea! Dog food in the rescue stations.

Actually, food requires water to digest so any kind of food is bad for anyone who is dying of thirst.

I love sardines. They're a regular camping food for me. But i don't bring them on hikes often as packing out the empty tin is a bother.

How about...

THIS WATER CONTAINS GIARDIA (protozoa Giardia lamblia)
Drink ONLY to prevent imminent death from dehydration.
Seek immediate medical treatment for Giardiasis upon leaving the trail.
