Yes, when you feel you're ready for a bit of a hike, PM us or just update this thread, and I (and I'm sure others) would be happy to accompany or guide you, if that would help. Just let us know.

Hi Sue,
My regards for your husbands passing, doing what he loved is a good way to pass, even though it's tough to take.
I'm not a tech guy, (no gps), but if the others here tell me where it is, I'll hike up & shoots some photos, (maybe even at sunrise!).
There 2 sections to the Lykken, (unless where referring to the Museum tr.).
The north & south, both with a north & south end to themselves.
I know all these fairly well.

Just keep me posted if I can help, and the others on here can contact me if you want to work together.

peace,

ss

Thank you, I appreciate all the kind comments, and the offers to guide me up the trail. It's most likely I'll wait until the fall to go there. I do have a few hiking friends who have offered to take me, and I'm assuming that because it's relatively low on the trail that finding the spot with GPS is do-able. Is that first hour of the path up difficult to follow in daylight? I read a disturbing article recently written about Lykken.

It's not all that hard to follow the trail in the daylight, just confusing with all the short cuts on the lowest part of the museum trail

Google maps is being a little coy. It marks two positions right near one another. :? Not sure what that's supposed to indicate.

I can say that when my dad passed in a trail accident in 2004, it seemed very fitting when I visited the site of his passing.

I know which article you're referring to Sue, but that was actually about the Museum trail (which does connect with the North Lykken trail up above.) Not knowing how to translate your GPS coordinates, I'm not sure if your husband was on the North Lykken trail or the Desert Museum (because both lead to Skyline, there sometimes is confusion and one is mistakenly called the other. ) In any event, the North Lykken is in decent condition and is not too confusing. If your husband was actually on the Desert Museum trail (which most people who are trying to do C2C use) then yes, that is very confusing, with many many shortcuts and braids, and it would be best to have someone local guide you.

Edit: I just looked at HJ's google map (and thanks for posting that HJ) and yes, it does like your husband was on the Desert Museum trail, not the North Lykken.

Hikin Jim, I'm sorry to hear about your dad and appreciate your comment. I think visiting the site will be good for me, and I know that the elevation was only 969 ft so I believe it's certainly close enough to accomplish.

Well, whenever you are ready in the fall (I suggest late October or better yet, November), let us know if you want us to assist you, and I or others here will be more than happy to guide you and your friends up the correct turns of the Desert Museum trail to the actual spot where he passed. Till then, keep well.
