Getting back to the original question: C2C is sometimes advertised as having the greatest elevation gain of any day hike in the US. That is not such an unreasonable claim. C2C is almost always done as a day hike and one is hard pressed to beat the elevation gain.
Of course, the Badwater to Telescope Peak hike has more elevation gain. I know people who have done it as a day hike and intend to get around to doing it myself. However, it is certainly not usually done as a day hike and the temptation to make it one is unlikely to grab all that many people.
One should also consider the difference between net elevation gain (the height of the summit minus the height at the trailhead) and total elevation gain (the sum of the elevation gains of every component of an up and down hike). We did a Baldy 9 Peaks day hike last summer that had close to 12000 feet of elevation gain and people have posted reports of hikes with total elevation gains much larger than that. [/b]
