So there's going to be a solar powered light on them? I assume the light will run all night? People will find them all right -- like a moth to a flame. I hope kids or whomever down in PS don't see the light and wonder "what the...?" and go up there.

I don't think either box is directly visible from the valley floor. Nor are they in line of sight from the tramway. The box at 5500' might be visible from way out by Indio or Coachella but you'd be too far away to ever see the light i think.

I really don't think the lights will be obtrusive, and will help when someones trying to get there ass out of a fix in the middle of the night with no light of their own.

I really hope we all show respect for these boxes and everything the PSMP SAR guys are doing.

They have put alot into this.....solely to help out.

Eric, that was a mistake stating that CVHC was involved, however, I am working on getting you guys in touch with the PSMP SAR. They greatly can use the help that you guys are able to provide.

Why would we not show respect? Everyone i've met via these forums are great people. It's the jerks that leave their boots and piles of empty water bottles along the trail that we need to worry about.

It's a mystery to me how anyone who is dedicated enough to make it to decent altitudes, and who apparently have a desire to spend significant time in the wilderness, also think it's ok to dump trash up there. Their mindset is simply beyond my comprehension...

bluerail on a different thread wrote:was up at box 2 tonight in the dark, the lites on them are perfect. They are almost as bright as someone with a headlamp on at a distance. Just enough to give you some comfort, and guide you to them if you were in trouble up there.

I'd love to see them at night. I'm thinking the upper box might be visible if i got up in the hills south of Palm Springs.

the lites at night are very nice, from a distance they seem like someones headlite, kinda faint, but visible. even up close they're pretty mellow. In my opinion they'r perfect, not visible over much more than probably 1/3 of a mile, and thats only if your looking. both of them are working great at night. if you were in trouble, they would be very comforting to see.

i'll put pics up later

The Press Enterprise has an interesting article saying that about 7000 hikers tackle Skyline annually. There are a few pictures also, and a super video.

In winter there are problems also. . A fixed rope or chain at the traverse might be a good idea with wand markers after that.
