hiking clubs? finding people to hike with?

The Sierra Club (no, they're not all eco-nazis) has a lot of outings, the vast majority of which are free (there tends to be a cost for overnight trips). You don't have to become a member to go on an outing (there might be one or two exceptions).

Not all eco-nazis? I guess that makes me curious about the percentage that are!

While we're on this generous streak:
Not all Democrats are socialists.
Not all Republicans are fascists.
Not all USC fans are drooling idiots.

Not all hikers escort their own child into a wilderness area w/o a permit.
Not all hikers advise a father and his child to break the law and enter a closed area.
Not all Democrats are socialists but some sure are hungry!

Not a member of the sahara club, but I've been to 2 or 3 meetings in my life. One I recall because a friend was giving a presentation, at the beginning someone stood up with a dozen clipboard with a dozen petitions to save everything and stop anything. As they were passed through the crowd to us near the back, I noticed that NONE of them had any signatures on it. I guess most just wanted to talk about hiking.

Passing around petitions may not be effective, but it is very American. I don't recall that the Nazis passed around a lot of petitions.
