Gotcha. That makes sense from what I've observed over time.

A few (very few) of the employees and volunteers are trained to do high-angle scree/snow/ice evacuations, but RMRU has more people specialized in that.

The SAR operations I have run across have been much bigger operations than the local rangers can handle. They depend on volunteers, often lots of them, from groups like RMRU. It is not a question of who gets credit, There are simply not enough rangers to handle a sizable search, not to mention the lack of helicopters, etc. Even a small operation I saw near the Baldy Ski Hut last year involved several agencies, a helicopter, fire trucks and ambulances, etc. Ant that was to get one heart attack victim out of the woods.
