2014 Get Together

Postby Perry » Mon Jun 02, 2014 1:26 pm

Recently I've seen Ellen and Cynthia by chance, and we've been talking about doing another get together this summer or fall. Suggestions? What day/month works for you?

Saturdays are good and we've had the greatest success at the top of the tram. The July 4th weekend is probably not a good one for this as folks are out of town a lot, but other weekends throughout the summer sound good. I always enjoy the chance to see everyone, so I definitely hope to be there.

Normally a Saturday mid-afternoon works best for me.

Maybe I'll make cornbread this year. :)

I think Perry is too polite to say this, but I think meeting on top of the mountain is perhaps a little too challenging with a fifteen month old in hand--I'm speaking as someone who (exhaustedly) wrangled a few up there myself. For one thing, babies hate the pressure change of the tram ride. Also, it's expensive for those who don't have annual passes. How about we simply meet down in Palm Springs at a local restaurant? Another option we once discussed but never pursued was meeting in the public meeting room/area of Whitewater--that's a good place for a potluck and hikes could take place before/after. But I say we do whatever is easiest for Perry and his family and let him make the call. I'm open to any day or time but it seems like weekends are generally best for most. I agree that the July 4th area is not the best. Anything else is fine but I'll likely be out of town from July 27 thru August 9th.

That cornbread looks insanely delicious, HJ.

I agree that a non-tram meeting place would be easier both physically and financially for many. I like the idea of somewhere where a hike could be thrown in with the festivities.

Ellen and I will be nowhere near CA from June 24 through July 9, so I hope y'all can work around that. We'll be hiking in the Alps (ho-hum!)

If you'll just pick up a few more tickets, I bet we'd have great turnout in the Alps...

The reason I mentioned the top of the Tram is that's the only place I've seen more than 10 of us show up at once. We did have a get together at my house once, but that's kinda far over in Yucaipa. I would be quite happy with just about anywhere but the last time it got moved around it also evaporated...

Simple, close by, and coinciding with people's normal hiking habits seems to be the best chance of working out.

We camped at Santa Ana River South Fork campground once too. I liked that.

The time we met in Yucaipa, we did the San Bernardino Peak Trail first as I recall. That was a nice time.

The time we went to S Fork CG, we hiked up to Fish Creek Saddle and some people might have done one of the peaks near the saddle. That was fun.

Every time we've gone up the tram, that's been fun. You can always save money by "just" hiking up Skyline so you don't have to do the tram. ;)

I think WhiteWater would be fun; that's a neat spot, although pretty hot in the summer.

Anywhere we meet would be good in my book. :)

Years ago, we had a decent turnout at the original Las Casuelas in Palm Springs. Thai Smile is also a pleasant place to eat.

The tram is additional cost, hassle with parking and waiting to ride, and it would be a hot ride for Lily in the summer.

Whitewater sounds really nice if it's not too hot. It would have to be October to avoid the heat. It's unlikely we could make it in the next few weeks. It would have to be planned well in advance.

I can ask Crystal how she feels about driving to Idyllwild. Last year, it seemed that Idyllwild members wanted to go somewhere else?

There was talk at one point of meeting at the county park in Idyllwild, the one near the Deer Springs Trail trailhead.

Thai Smile sounds good too.

Las Consuelas is good. We celebrated Cy's B Day there one time.
