Hiker Dies In Palm Springs

A hiker died in Palm Springs today and another was severely dehydrated while hiking in Murray Canyon. The news info that's available can be found here.

Its time the powersa to be CLOSE all hiking trails into the mountains during the summer, these people have no idea the risk and the extreme costs to rescue them , helicopters are at $1,000 per hr, all these HIKERS can find a better place to do there hiking during the summer since they don't use any common sense.

Yeah, great idea. Close all hiking trails at high altitude. Better that those dumb hikers spend their time hiking down here on the desert floor where it's safe.

Horribly sad story. I wish (as usual) the paper had given more info. One thing I'd like to point out to anyone considering a September morning stroll up Skyline--this 43 year old hiker died from five hours or less of sun exposure (canyons don't open until 8 a.m.) Put it another way: he started out on a hike at 8 a.m. and was perfectly fine; in less than five hours the heat killed him. And, the hike he died on is not even very strenuous. It is still WAY TOO HOT to safely do Skyline.

I believe that the temps in Belgium this time of year average in the 60s, so it would have been very extreme for them.

The dehydrated person is my cousin.

They had a lot of water, minerals and vitamins with them, they were very well prepared, and they had experience with that kind of hikes.

But the dead person had a heart attack, and my cousin in a panic ran for help to the nearest road. He stopped the first car that passed, and was able to tell them where his friend was located. Then he fell unconcious

In that panic he forgot to take water.



So, they only had really bad luck! .

My cousin is still in critical condition, I hope he makes it. At this moment, his brothers are on there way to Palm Springs.


And yes, here in Belgium we are not used to that kind of temperatures...
