Mount San Jacinto Peaks

Postby Wild » Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:13 am

Hey there!

I've been plotting xc routes around the hill to hit as many peaks as possible and I came across a few peaks I was unaware of on certain maps. With your help, I'd like to compile a list of all the official named peaks, as well as local names for various other peaks. The reason I bring this up is because while trekking a bit east of Marion Mtn last weekend, I stumbled upon a small peak with a register on it, which was named Lepake Peak. I had never heard of such a peak before and thought it was a cool surprise.

Now, my question is, what peaks do you know of on San J? Here is a list of what I am aware of:

Antsell Rock
Apache Peak
Black Mountain
Castle Rocks
Cienaga Peak
Cornell Peak
Divide Peak
Folly Peak
Harvard Peak
Jean Peak
Lepake Peak
Lily Rock
Luella Todd Peak
Marion Mountain
Miller Peak
Newton Drury Peak
Palm View Peak
Pine Mountain
Red Tahquitz Peak
Sam Fink Peak
San Jacinto Peak
Southwell Peak
Spitler Peak
Suicide Rock
Tahquitz Peak
Yale Peak

Are you talking about san jacinto itself or are you talking about the whole range Danny? You're way down the desert divide to the Santa Rosas with this list.

Hehehe, yeah I know sorry...should have specified!

I'm basically encompassing the whole massif I guess. I was trying to stay clear of the Santa Rosas but I guess I did go overboard huh

I'll edit the list and end it at Palm View Peak, since that seems to be the end of the big southern ridge of the mountain. Know of any other ones Steve?

Nice list. :)

I don't see Landells Peak (9356) on the list although that may be the Luella Todd Peak you're referring to. I've seen that peak referred to by both names.

Here's a map of the area with prominent peaks labeled. You'll have to scroll down to see peaks south of Saddle Junction.
A - Yale Peak
B - Harvard Peak
C - Cornell Peak
D - "The Bump"
E - Miller Peak (not really a peak, but it has a name anyway)
F - San Jacinto Peak
G - Little Folly Pk
H - Folly Pk
I - Newton Drury
J - Jean Peak
K - Shirley Peak
L - Marion Peak
M - Landells Peak.
N - Divide Peak
O - Longview Dome
P - Red Tahquitz (great view!!). Pt. 8792 just west of here isn't much of a peak, but it is sometimes called "Gray Tahquitz".
Q - Tahquitz Peak
R - Lilly Rock (but more commonly called "Tahquitz")
S - Suicide Rock
T - Southwell Peak (officially called South Peak)
U - Antsell Rock (fun class 3)
V - Apache Peak
W - Spitler Peak
X - Palm View Peak
Y - Pyramid Peak
Z - Pine Mountain

Obviously there are a lot more peaks on the Desert Divide, but I was running out of letters. :(

More peaks. :)

A - Sam Fink Peak
B - Castle Rocks
C - Black Mountain (although there are several points that could be referred to as Black Mtn, this is the one I think of)
D - Cienega Point or Cienega Peak
E - Unnamed as far as I know
F - Unnamed as far as I know
G - Unnamed as far as I know
H - Unnamed as far as I know
I - Unnamed as far as I know
J - Unnamed as far as I know
K - Unnamed as far as I know

Maybe one of the unnamed points is the Lepake Peak you spoke of?

Can you be more specific about the location of "Lepake peak"? Is it north of the PCT and east of Deer Springs trail?

This is a slight correction to Jim's placement of Longview Dome. Longview Dome is closer to Long Canyon than to Hidden Lake. It's easy to see on the satellite image.

The HPS is certainly pushing for that. The state park map lists it as Landells Peak as though it were a done deal. Neither name is official in the eyes of the USGS.

Some background on Luella Todd from a 2002 HPS write up:
The peak, some want to name Luella Todd Peak after the first HPS women to earn the 100 peaks emblem. She was instrumental in setting up our section, picking the first set of peaks, served on our management committee and she hiked with us for over thirty years.

I assume "Landells Peak" is named for Don Landells, founder of Landells aviation. Don flew many a rescue mission in conjunction with RMRU in the 1970's.

Both are distinguished names with good ties to mountain peaks.
