Who's Hikin Where This Weekend?

Postby magikwalt » Fri Jun 29, 2007 1:57 pm

Too hot for me here in Palm Springs so on Saturday I'm head to the South Fork Trail Head in San Gorgonio Wilderness. Ellen's discription of the loop trail caught my eye.

Sunday evening watching the sunset from Wellman Divide.

Howdy Walt :D

I'm headed up the San Bernardino Peak trail in the San Gorgonio wilderness with Lance on Sunday. We'll start hiking at 5 AM to beat some of the heat.

Here's a NOOA link that gets you to 11,000 feet near the summit:
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapCli ... &map.y=152

Let me know if you have any questions about South Fork (951 684-3460).
It's a great loop, even if the first and last 5 miles are the same. At least you're in the trees.

I carried 3 liters of fluid. Based on the temp change, now I would carry at least 4 liters. You may be able to get some water from Dollar Lake and Dry Lake, although I wouldn't count on it. You'll have plenty of water at Trail Fork Springs, but it comes early (about 5 miles in) and late (about 5 miles to go) in the loop.

Oh, don't forget to stop at the pub at the top of San G for a brew

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Just one word of caution. When you say "Trail Fork Springs," I think you're referring to the spot where the trail forks in South Fork Meadows. Here: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34.13073&lon=-116.84275&datum=nad27&u=4&layer=DRG&size=l&s=24

There is a place actually named "Trail Fork Springs" where the Forsee Creek Trail joins in with the trail from E San Bernardino Pk and Anderson Flat. Here: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34.12979&lon=-116.89386&s=24&size=l&u=4&datum=nad27&layer=DRG. That "Trail Fork Springs" has no water currently and I would hate to have anyone get the impression that it did.

Am I catching on to what's going on or am I totally lost (as usual)?

By the way, do we still need our membership card for the pub on top of San G? It's a nice place, but they're so darned picky about the stupid membership cards.

I've got an unexperienced friend coming to town this weekend, so I'll probably do something really easy from the tram on Sunday morning. Then, I'm headed to a cooler climate for 10 days. I'll be frolicking through lakes, streams and mosquitoes in the Wisconsin/Minnesota area. I hope I don't get carried off by one!

Be well,

Mike

P.S.--Anyone know any good hikes in Wisconsin/Minnesota?

One of the nice things about living and hiking in Scotland was there was always a pub nearby. You would think someone would at least put a Waffle House somewhere out there.

Hi Jim,

Your first link is correct. The parking area is about 5 miles north of that fork. The group I'm with calls it the South Fork Trail so I may be repeating an incorrect name.

Marion Mountain Trail to the summit on Sunday morning, July 1st. For the return trip, I am considering taking the trail to Wellman Divide, then to Strawberry Junction, then back to the Marion Mountain Trail.

I hiked the South Fork Trail last Saturday intending to reach the summit via Dollar Lake Trail. We turned back just past Dry Lake View as my hiking partner got sick. It was a nice hike to that point.

Howdy Jim :D

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I was referring to where the trail forks in South Fork Meadows  When it comes to knowing where there's water, HikingJim is THE MAN.

I had no problem with the my membership card at the San G summit pub two weeks ago. Only problem -- they were out of beer  Instead, I entertained myself by feeding the chipmunks. Those little characters really like Nacho Baked Doritos :P

Howdy Walt :D

I definately have to hike in Scottland

Love your screen name 8) Hope you have the oppurtunity to do the full South Fork loop soon, as it's a great hike. Vivian may be the hardest and quickest way to the summit, but the loop offers terrific scenery. IMO, the only San G hike that has better scenery is the ridge hike I did with Walt and Karin in June.

I did the South Fork Loop (Dollar Lake, San G Summit and down the Dry Lake Trail) today and Ellen is spot on. Great hike. We hit the summit at 10:45am and on the way down found the 1950's plane crash site that Ellen had told me about.

Wow Walt, you're really getting around here in the San G wilderness. That's a really good loop, so I have to say Ellen's got good taste and she's giving you good advice. Of course, I would expect nothing less from Ellen. :) I haven't been up in the last couple of weeks, trying to nurse a little pesky injury. I could actually go, but I want to be 100% when I go with my family to Tuolumne Meadows (Yosemite), so I've been sitting out. It's killin' me.

With any luck, I should see you guys out on the trail in the next couple of weeks.
