Would like to use an iPhone or Droid trail mapping app.

Howdy SummitBagger :)

Verizon coverage on the summit of San J is almost non-existent. If the stars are alligned perfectly  I can call or text from the summit with Verizon. My friend Karin gets coverage all the way up Skyline to the summit with ATT. Bottom line -- I'm switching to ATT.

I have ATT cell reception from the museum to the tram. Not sure of the reception from the tram to the San Jacinto summit.

Interesting. My experience has been exactly the opposite when I'm in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. I get much better coverage than friends from my Verizon phone. Like I say, though, that's in the SGW not San Jacinto.

Guess you have to keep different phones for different wildernesses.

Howdy HJ :)

I've never been able to get coverage anywhere in the San G wilderness, even from a summit :( I've even increased my roaming before leaving the trailhead. May be the phone and/or my specific plan.

Verizon works fine on Skyline for me, once I leave the tram I'm without coverage unless I have line of sight to the floor of the SG pass or Coachella Valley.
Happy Trails!

If you're using a trail mapping app on an iPhone, you don't need cell coverage at all since it should use the built-in GPS on the iPhone. There are only a couple of spots along the way where the GPS reception on my iPhone is a little spotty, but it's no different than any other GPS device (in my experience)... just slightly less accurate than some.

But if you need to make calls, AT&T coverage on the mountain is far superior to Verizon. My iPhone gets 4 bars on the summit, but I only get about 75% overall coverage on C2C. That was still enough to get my ESPN ScoreCenter alerts, post to FB and Twitter, and send/receive about 200 texts on my last C2C2C.

Nothing like heading out to the wilderness and getting away from it all, I always say.

On the day some of us did C2C2C I was amazed at how many people were at the peak, maybe 75 or so. They were all on their phones, half of them happily chatting away and half of them cussing at their phones. It really was quite comical. I have Verizon and I've never gotten a call out from the peak, so I don't bother to try. Instead, I simply push the "I'm OK" button on my SPOT to let my husband know when I summit.

Verizon works for me on the summit. So AT&T has coverage up there? now they should focus on coverage in civilization! And not dropping calls every other minute. Only a fool would switch verizon to at&t for coverage.
