Canyoneering?

Postby mjordon » Mon Feb 01, 2010 8:04 pm

Hi,

Does anyone have canyoneering experience or advice on locations around the San Jacinto/ Santa Rosa/ San Gorgonio ranges?

I heard that there is some really good stuff out there and I'm interested in checking it out before it gets hot again.

Thanks!

mjordon,

this site has tons of good info on canyons in the area.

I can't speak for the actual canyoneering/rating accuracy as most of my time on rope has been spent in the Zion area, but from my own knowledge of the local mountains this is a great source of info. My guess is the big difference or should I say deterrence around here is access (bushwhacking) to and from most of the routes.

Here's a pretty good write-up on some falls off of the Ortega highway. Again, pretty impressive rappels but oneheluva hike.

Enjoy!

Mind if I bring this topic back from the dead? Has anyone done any cool technical/wet canyons here?

I saw some posts on the San G board a year or so ago. Had some very specific reviews of approaches and how to attack a number of falls in the Vivian Creek / Big Falls area. I've never done any of that, but it seemed clear enough to give a real good idea of easiest routes (avoiding bushwhacking) to get to some beautiful hidden back country. You might post over there - I'd do a search if it had that capacity and just give you the link, but it doesn't have any such features.

Here's a quick google of big falls. Did you already look at this?

This looks like a really cool sport. Have you done a lot of it?

I've not done that route yet. I'm looking at San J area for it, for the whole desert kinda scenery and all that, and the better rock and because I've got a lotta friends nearby. :-)

It's a very fun sport. It's often called the "Fat Man's Extreme Sport", because relatively little work is required compared to other technical pursuits.
