Accessing the Gordon Trail....NOT!

Postby halhiker » Fri Dec 12, 2008 12:09 am

Went for a little hike today in Palm Springs to see if there was an easy access point to get on the fabled Gordon Trail. There is not. I did hike up the canyon between Tahquitz and Andreas and discovered a little trickle of running water at the end. I have been told this is called Os Wit Canyon. That means wild cat or Bobcat in Cahuilla.

I guess to get to the Gordon Trail, I will have to do what I did when I hiked it years ago, clamber up a steep rock ridge about 2000 feet and hope to stumble upon it. I just don't know if I'll get a chance to get to it before we get a winter storm and snow. I could hike up and down but I'd prefer to follow it to Caramba and then to the Tram or Idyllwild.

I took some pictures and they're on my blog. I know FIGHT ON! will love the first one.

The pictures didn't come out that big because my kids monkeyed around with my camera and I didn't realize it until I downloaded them.

Nice blog so far, Hal.

I'm making up for all your hiking: I sprained my left knee a couple of days before Thanksgiving, so no hiking at all for me for a while.

Hal,
Are you the same Hal that used to have a backpacking shop in PD in the 90's? Was looking at the pictures and noticed the kid with the red hair, got me curious. If this is you it's really nice running across you here.
I also live in the cove.

PLMK, thanks.

Perhaps the "year of hiking" doesn't start until Jan 1?

Pretty cool canyon photos -- particularly the part where you used a ladder.

The every day endeavor is not until the beginning of the year. I just kinda getting warmed up right now. I'm figuring out how to properly post pictures and I want to figure out how to embed YouTube video. I'd like to shoot some, especially on those trips where I take my kids and their friends. I think they'd get a kick out of showing it off at school.

Ill be taking my boys and some more neighbor kids hiking in 1000 Palms Saturday. After our last adventure, more kids want to go but I've only got seven seats in the wife's mini van. :( Of course, the hike there is kinda short so I might take two groups. I'd hate to discourage any youngsters from wanting to go on a hiking adventure. I figure if they learn good skills when they are young, they won't have to get rescued when they're older.

You've never been to Ladder Canyon? It's a desert classic. Once you get that knee healed up (maybe you need some hiking poles ) I'll give to directions. Both it and the Grottos hike in the Mecca Hills are must-do adventures for any Southern California hiker.

Ya, I can just see the video now. Some neighborhood kid saying, "Hey Mr. Hal, That signs says we can't go in there!" and you responding, "Kid, It takes a real man to walk past these signs, and besides, I wanna have a real ADVENTURE!" That will go over real well with their parents. and the teachers will be proud to use the videos for some sort of school learning project too. Especially the part of you leading your family past those signs. Make sure you send a link to the parents of those kids you take too. There ALL gonna love it! It's bad enough that you do this alone or with another adult, but with your own kids? and the neighbors kids too? WAY TO GO HAL!
