Jim,

Wow you basically summarized everything I need to know about the permit info. I was sooo confused reading the 2 different sites on Park.gov and USVA....

I even called one of the #s and they said i had to talk to another department etc.. etc.. and I couldnt find out exactly which permit I needed.

I guess if I take the tram up I can just get it same day up at the top ranger office.

Yes, for day hikes, you can just ride the tram and get the permit from the State Park Ranger Station "at the top" (in Long Valley). If you cross the boundary into the Federal part of the Wilderness the USFS will honor the permit issued by the State Park.

For an overnight permit, it's best to make arrangements ahead of time to prevent disappointment. Unlike day permits, overnight permits need to be obtained from both the State and Federal rangers (if you plan to stay overnight in both areas during the course of your hike).
