Rancho Mirage closing access to Bump and Grind trail

Postby halhiker » Fri Jul 18, 2008 11:59 pm

I think this is a good action by the council and will move people out of a residential area into an access area better suited for the amount of traffic this "trail" gets.

I have worked for trail access in the past and know more about the local trails than anyone I've ever met and I support this action.

I also think it's ridiculous that the city council is spending $21,000 to widen a perfectly good trail for some stupid cows who can't walk up a trail single file. I can think of plenty of other trails that could use some funding. This is a waste of money.

Anyway, here's a link:

Bump and Grind Reroute

Postby MikeCaAlaska » Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:52 am

And now the rest of the story. In addition to the gates and the possible widening of the trail coming in off Desert Crossings / Painters Path, if any one has been up on the Herb Jefferies trail to where it connects into the Bump and Grind you will see a new gate.

The gate was placed a few weeks ago by the State Fish and Game and closes off access to the upper portion of Bump and Grind. If you look at the new trails map for the Santa Rosa's put out by the Friends of the Desert Mountains, you will see that they do not show the old Bump and Grind route.

The State closed the rest of the trail off due to Big horn Sheep impact (Magnesia Springs State Ecological Preserve).

ps - I have heard rumors that the signs on the gate had been torn off within a couple days of erecting the fence.
