Snow conditions above Round Valley

Postby Whitney Mike » Fri May 16, 2008 7:40 am

A small group of us will be doing C2C on Saturday, May 31st. I know from reading other posts that the Skyline trail to Long Valley is snow free, but I have read that there is still plenty of snow and ice on the secton of trail above Round Valley before you get to Wellman's Divide. If anyone who summits in the next couple of weeks could post a snow report for me and my group, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Whitney Mike

See next post. I accidentally posted twice and could not figure out how to delete one.

Trail Condition, Saturday, May 17, 2008

Postby Ken7 » Sat May 17, 2008 5:50 pm

I walked to San Jacinto peak from Long Valley today. In many places beginning in Round Valley the trail is buried in snow. It is hard to follow at some places between Round Valley and Wellman's Divide and between Wellman's Divide and the area where the switchbacks begin. There is no ice, just snow, slushy snow. It is melting fast and the trail will probably be in better condition soon.

Many people visited the peak today, many in sneakers, and I saw one wearing sandals.

I was checking to see if anyone went from the tram to the summit anytime over the Memorial weekend. I am interested in finding out what the current snow conditions are, especially above Round Valley. My group will be leaving the museum this Saturday, May 31st, at 12:30am. I am going to pack my ice ax just in case the trail needs a little clearing of snow once we get above Round Valley. Thank you. I made it to the peak yesterday. Snow conditions were pretty much as described earlier in this thread. I went up in trail running shoes and no gear, and found no areas that I would describe as potentially dangerous.

Is the trail after Wellman's Divide completely covered by snow? Do you have difficulty in finding the route?

For those without much experience, we recently recovered a body of someone who slipped wearing "sneakers". It was interesting to note that the model of sneakers were labeled ALL TERRAINS

Whenever you step out on snow or ice there is the possibility of a potentially disasterous slip. On a recent SAR mission, a skilled rescuer slipped off the trail and after a slide of only a hundred or so feet, required a litter/C-spine/airlift out. We are all gun ho to do these hikes without carrying needless gear but please keep this in mind when making your decisions.

Snow condition in traverse of C2C

Postby unixzw » Wed May 28, 2008 1:58 pm

I wonder whether anyone has information about snow/ice condition in the traverse segment of the Skyline trail (near the upper tram station) in Memorial Day weekend? Thanks!
