Hiking Garstin this morning, I saw what at first I took (with deranged optimism) to be a giant weather front in the pass over San G., and then realized, a second later, it's a huge smoke cloud. I'm not good with geography over there but it looks like it's at the top of Whitewater Canyon. It looks big and bad. The smoke is starting to fill up the Coachella Valley. Info, anyone?
Just checked KESQ--they're calling it the Lake Fire, it's 1500 acres and 5 percent contained, it started last night, it's south of Jenks Road, and they're closing all hiking trails in the San Gorgonio Wilderness.
