Well, you DO need to camp in designated sites in the State portion of the San Jacintos. You do not in the Federal portion.

Ohh, OK, thank you. I better look at a map.

The South Ridge Trail and the Devil's slide trail -- as well as the trails that connect them -- are all in the Federal Portion. The State portion starts over toward Wellman's Divide/Hidden Lake Divide.

I might try a hike up palm canyon next weekend, and I might try to go as light as possible. I have really been considering each piece of gear I have.

Oh wait, are we entering monsoon season? Wasn't one of the crazy flash floods in april? Maybe I shouldn't go in the canyon...

Do flash floods ever come completely by surprise? Or will there be some weather indications if rain is possible?

Normally, the weather reports will list when thunderstorms are a possibility. I wouldn't stop a trip just because it were a time of year in which thunderstorms might happen.
