Hey jimson, so my friend and i are trying to hike to Mount San Jacinto via Tramway (top of tram) this coming weekend and it will be pretty cold up there at the high 30s.
You can check this website http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/ ... casts/3293 and click the different elevations for the respective forecasts.

We also just called SJ State Park for info on the weather conditions and as of today, 12/22/14, there are patches of snow near Long Valley, but on the way to the summit they have about 12" of snow
and require crampons or the like... They are not expecting any more snow but they said to call a day or two before the hike to get a more up to date condition report.

Hope that helps! Happy trails!

I would like to know also. I was planning on a nice hike within the next couple of days but dont know what to expect. I summit san jacinto last year during this exact time and was just fine with only tennis shoes, although I had a few slippery falls on my behind ;). Any insight from recent hikers? ?

I did it on Tuesday and needed micro spikes. The trail was very icy and there is a lot of snow up there right now. You should bring spikes and poles.

I hiked from the tram to round valley with my father-in-law today and you'll definitely want something beyond just hiking boots. Snow depth isn't a concern if you stay on the trail but what is on the trail is packed snow and ice. We used walking sticks to steady and detoured off the path in its slicker spots and did fine, but you will enjoy it more with microspikes.

thank you for the feedback; i hiked yesterday via humber park to wellmans divide and yes, definitely glad i had some microspikes, some areas were icy and would have been a challenge without them. It was amazing I will be back tomorrow.

Jimson (or anyone), could you provide me with an update on the trail. I've been reading on here and it seems like microspikes are the way to go. Just wanted to get an update from you on your thoughts as it appears you're the most recent to travel there (Dec. 27). I'm coming for a vacation from Canada and am planning to do C2C on January 5th, so would appreciate any condition updates on both the Traverse and the Tram to Peak trail. Seems like Ellen had a fairly straight forward time on the Skyline trail on December 25th, so I'm thinking I can do the Skyline in just my trail shoes. From there though I'd probably want to switch to boots and spikes.
