newbie hiker- skyline trail

Postby Brandon » Sat Oct 13, 2007 11:07 pm

i'd like to expand my horizons in regards to hiking.

i love the outdoors and exercise- weightlifting, resistance training, camping, and kayaking are some of my loves.

however, i'm not too confident about my skills on the trail. the only noteworthy hikes on my list have been half dome

will anyone be hiking the skyline trail in the near future (next couple weeks or so)? i'd like to tag along with some experienced individual(s)

i live in near-sea level location out in orange county. is altitude acclimatization an issue when attempting to complete the skyline trail? might it be best to make it an overnight hike?

thanks,

me
smile, it's okay to be happy

I'll let others answer as to whether they'll be doing skyline--I might but it will be a last minute decision and I prefer to hike it alone--but I will answer two questions.

No, acclimatization is not an issue on the Skyline

No, it is not best done as an overnight hike; you should do it in a day because you don't want to carry the extra stuff required for an overnight hike.

Newby hiker - Skyline Trail

I will be going on October 27 at 4 am. I will be there 3.30 am. It takes me about eight hours to get to Long Valley. Anyone in good condition (5000 ft conditioning hike at 1000 ft per hour prior) is welcome to come along. Maybe next Saturday too.

The gain on Skyline is about 8000', which is pretty huge. I think it'd be a really good idea to work up to that kind of gain by doing hikes with lesser gain first if you haven't already been doing so.

You might try hiking nearby Mt. San Gorgonio via the relatively easy to follow Vivian Creek Trail which has about 6000' of gain. It's higher elevation (altitude might be an issue), but it will give you an idea of how 6000' of gain feels.

i'll be on the trail that day also but i will be leaving earlier than you (2am)since i am not really sure how long it will take me since this is my first time trying to reach the summit from the valley floor... who knows you still might pass me up on the trail -shrugs- 8)
my candle burns at both its ends;
it will not last the night;
but ahh, my foes and ohh, my friends---
it casts a lovely light...

A hiker from the Press Enterprise - Sean, may be coming with me on 10/27. I think he wants to go all the way to the peak.
